Alfa Romeo Spyder Concept by Pininfarina

There is a blood-red Barchetta sat on the Pininfarina stand at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show, calling our interior Benjamin Braddock. We almost jumped in and went to save the woman of your dreams on the altar of marriage.

To hear people say that the Pininfarina, the apogee of all’italiana uplifting sports car season came in 1967 when Dustin Hoffman took his red Alfa Romeo Duetto on the big screen in The Graduate. That is why this concept car is called the Pininfarina 2ettottanta (du-eh-toh-tah TAN), a play on words in Italian for “two” and “Duet” as the nickname for the Alfa Spider Duetto most famous, and then Ottanta for the 80th anniversary of Pininfarina to be celebrated this year.

Alfa Romeo Spider was first presented in 1950 (was the last car in which Battista “Pinin” Farina took a personal hand) and then went into production in 1966, when he earned the name “Duetto” in a lottery contest Italy . He left the production line at the factory of manufacture to Pininfarina 1993.Today are driving this concept car Alfa Romeo Spider (not so fast, please, there’s only one, you know) and around the southeast compound Pininfarina in Turin. You get the idea loud and clear, of course. Where the Fiat Group Automobiles Inc. finally learns to make an Alfa Romeo as selling an Audi or BMW, Pininfarina, head of the projected image, like the Alfa Romeo 2ettottanta should be a key element of the product mix.

Look below the layer of car paint and bright red is not a surprise. We did the whole body in just to make sure that we were told that it was true, and Pininfarina 2ettottanta truth is made of wood. Applewood, to be precise – machined, shaped and polished.

This is a nice touch, since the traditional way of preparing body panels in aluminum foil Turin asked to be beaten as on ways of wood (sometimes only a tree stump), which represents the appearance of asymmetric some of the sexiest Italian sports cars of all time. Fiat platform from an undisclosed source is below the body and its wheelbase measures 98.4 inches long, or just an inch shorter than the current Alfa Spider that runs in front wheel drive platform of the Alfa Romeo 159 .

Packagewise, falls somewhere between the size of 2ettottanta and Audi TT Roadster Nissan 370Z Roadster. If we had a comparison test going, we’ll probably bring someone Chrysler Crossfire Roadster just for yucks, too. They all need to be with the engine cowl convertible in front, at least.

Lowie Vermeersch Pininfarina, the Belgian-born director of the project 2ettottanta, tells us: “Back in the early design of showcar in October 2009, we were thinking only of capturing the sheer fun and enjoyment of that great wide-open style of driving.

It must be because Vermeersch said to the owner of an Alfa Romeo Spider 1976. Maybe that’s why (in development that should make Alfisti drooling in anticipation) of 2ettottanta has a turbocharged 232-horsepower inline-4 mounted longitudinally in front that drives – hallelujah! – The rear wheels.

Pininfarina took the concept of the Alfa Romeo Duetto and gave her more mature proportions for the modern world, transferring the passenger tub back instead of leaving him dead. The buttresses are imaginative, but I doubt they make the production of this form.

Over its lifetime, the original Alfa Romeo Spider had three fundamental interactions: the initial project is known as bone di seppia, or cuttlefish bone and referring to the curved tail, then came the call to cut the coda Tronca tail, and finally AERODYNAMICS that blurred the two together a bit. “We had a bit of both bone and coda di seppia Tronca projects,” Vermeersch tells us, “but then the vast majority are much more modern and, we think, better proportions.”

The 2ettottanta really seems a smaller version of the Alfa Romeo 8C Spider, with its roof open permanently. The car seems to be quite slippery through the air in computer simulations, registering families within Cd.Something 0.32

The body applewood creates a flawless surface for a red resin, not to mention the perfect sound insulation. As wood could be held in crash tests? One word: shells.

We eagerly anticipate a jump rider on the doors to the bank and apple leather sports seats, but a small black button on the body allows the door open smoothly on its hinges. The leather work here meets your expectations for fine Italian craftsmanship. Her drawing is not very different from the latest BMW Z4, which intersect with the swooping lines highlighted by two tones.

Simple controls make us happy and clear throughout. Here’s hoping the central tunnel of a production version can still stay slim and that this feature Getrag dual-clutch automated manual transmission. The small shift lever on the center console is perfect in hand, and the Start button, in red in the thumb is a great solution that looks great, too.

The signature red Alfa, in fact, is everywhere. The garish red instrument dials are large and easily legible and Pininfarina has explored the distinctive Alfa Romeo round very well, making it the fulcrum for all needles. The interface of the adaptive chassis of current models of Alfa Romeo is just the back of the gear lever machined aluminum and serious feel like us, just click on the trigger between D (Dynamic), N (Normal) and A (all weather) . (Alfa Romeo, take note, please.)
